Four members of the English family died after a fire at their Birchwood home in Waterford on October 13, 2026: Kim and Philip English and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine. Two other children were critically injured. Gardaí opened a murder investigation into what they described as an arson attack.

The loss of two parents and two children is the center of this story. The arrests and court appearances that followed are the effort to establish how the fire was started and who was responsible.

The investigation widens

Within a week, the investigation had brought both arrests and criminal proceedings. On October 20, Gardaí announced three further arrests. Each was an investigative step; an arrest did not itself establish that the person would be charged or found guilty.

Two defendants, Cian Stacey and Jessica Dalton, were already before the court. At an October 20 hearing, they were further remanded in custody, with November 17 set for their next appearance, according to The Munster Express.

The charges and the murder inquiry

The charges reported against Stacey and Dalton were criminal damage and serious assault connected with the fire. Those charges must be distinguished from the wider murder investigation. Describing the inquiry as a murder case does not mean that every person arrested has been charged with murder.

That distinction became especially important as the investigation continued. RTÉ reported on October 26, in an article updated the following day, that a further suspect had been released without charge. A file was to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Release without charge belongs in the story just as clearly as the arrest. It is a change in that person’s position, even while investigators continue their work. It should not disappear from an account that retains the earlier suspicion.

A family’s deaths, an unfinished account

The available record establishes the deaths, the arson investigation and the proceedings already underway. It does not yet provide a completed court account of responsibility. Filling that gap with an assumed motive or an imagined sequence inside the house would misrepresent what is known.

We will follow additional charges, prosecutorial decisions and verified findings, beginning with the next reported court appearance on November 17. As the case develops, the chronology will preserve both the investigative steps and their outcomes. The purpose is to explain what happened to the English family without turning an unfolding inquiry into a story whose ending has already been decided.
