Seven Disappearance Cases: Evidence, Theories and Established Findings

5 min readMay 9, 2026

A documented movement, a theory and an established finding are different kinds of information.

These seven cases illustrate that distinction. Footage can show a departure without revealing its purpose. A reported encounter can generate a lead without identifying a perpetrator. A confession can change the status of a case that older summaries still present as entirely unexplained.

The comparisons below separate those categories. They do not rank a dangerous meeting, psychological crisis or concealed shipboard incident as the most probable explanation merely because a case remains unresolved. Natalee Holloway’s case also requires the major 2023 confession and federal plea to be acknowledged.

Mekayla Bali

The RCMP’s April 2026 appeal identifies the Yorkton bus depot as Mekayla Bali’s last known location on April 12, 2016. She did not board a bus.

A sequence of public movements does not establish that she was arranging a meeting or that anyone trapped her. The purpose of an observed action and the identity of a contact require independent evidence.

Jodi Huisentruit

Jodi Huisentruit disappeared in Mason City, Iowa, on June 27, 1995. The Charley Project records scattered belongings near her car and investigators’ belief that she was taken against her will.

Those observations do not establish that an attacker knew her routine, had stalked her or intercepted her according to a prearranged plan. In July 2026, the investigator leading the case described continuing work on tips. A continuing investigation is distinct from a proven reconstruction.

Lars Mittank

German police place Lars Mittank’s last confirmed sighting at Varna Airport on July 8, 2014. Their notice records an ear injury, medical advice against flying and his abrupt departure from the airport doctor without his luggage or phone.

Police describe the reason for that departure as unclear. Footage cannot diagnose a psychological condition or establish that he subsequently died. Dramatic behavior is not a substitute for a medical assessment or evidence of later events.

Natalee Holloway

Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba in 2005. In October 2023, Joran van der Sloot admitted killing her as part of a federal plea agreement, according to NPR’s courtroom reporting. That admission is a major development, rather than simply another unproven theory.

The U.S. Justice Department records a twenty-year sentence for extortion and wire fraud. Those were the federal convictions; they were not a murder conviction in Holloway’s death. A killing confession, a conviction for a different offense and recovery of remains should not be treated as interchangeable milestones.

Amy Bradley

The FBI says Amy Lynn Bradley disappeared early on March 24, 1998, from the cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas while it traveled between Aruba and Curaçao. The FBI continues to seek information.

The shipboard setting does not itself establish an abduction, trafficking or a particular crew member’s involvement. A limited location record cannot prove what happened after the last reliable observation.

Asha Degree

The FBI continues to list Asha Degree as missing from Shelby, North Carolina, since February 14, 2000. Its notice describes drivers’ highway sightings that morning and the later discovery of her book bag.

Those observations do not reveal why she left home or prove that she was responding to an invitation. A theory of grooming or planned contact needs corroboration; it cannot be established by the mere fact of a child’s unexplained departure.

Rebecca Coriam

Rebecca Coriam was reported missing from Disney Wonder on March 22, 2011. A December 2011 Royal Bahamas Police statement described searches, interviews and analysis of CCTV. Police said the investigation had not found evidence of foul play and remained open.

That was the police position at the time, not proof of an accident or a finding that a concealed crime occurred. A vessel’s operating procedures cannot substitute for evidence of an individual’s final movements.

Why These Disappearances Still Divide People

A missing segment does not tell us what filled it. To compare theories responsibly, ask which observations are independently verified, which accounts are disputed and whether a later finding has changed the case.

Different evidence can support different levels of confidence. A source that records a sighting does not necessarily support a conclusion about intent. A witness’s suspicion is not a forensic finding. A legal judgment should be described with the offense and jurisdiction that produced it.

Conclusion

These cases have different evidence and different outcomes. Holloway’s case includes a killing confession; the other accounts retain substantial unresolved questions. Readers should keep established developments separate from interpretation and remain alert to the date of an investigative statement.
